The First-Ever WWE Universal Champion Was Crowned At WWE SummerSlam

WWE SummerSlam 2016 featured matches for every WWE Championship, but it also featured the debut of a brand new championship: the WWE Universal Championship, a “world championship” for the newly-split Raw brand. Dean Ambrose holding the WWE Championship as a Smackdown Superstar necessitated the new belt, and Seth Rollins and Finn Bálor were chosen to fight for it.

First of all, here’s your first look at the belt.

Yes, it looks like it’s made with Fruit Roll-ups. Yes, it kinda looks like Kane’s class ring. But it’ll look appropriate on this guy:

It was the WWE pay-per-view (and, technically, WWE main roster in-ring debut) of “The Demon King,” and a battle between two former NXT Champions. Seth Rollins was looking to add another “first” to his list, but it wasn’t meant to be … The Demon King was able to catch him with a series of dropkicks and the Coup De Grace to become the first WWE Superstar in history to win a world championship in his PPV debut.

Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon were on hand to present the championship to Finn, and (we’re assuming) to ignore all the “this belt sucks” chants. Congratulations to Finn, and let’s hope Cage shows up and rips it in half so they have to order a new one.
