Early Monday morning, ABC’s Good Morning America aired an interview with everyone’s favorite Windy City emcee, Chance the Rapper (sorry, Yeezy). During this segment, the rapper and Song of the Summer winner talked with Robin Roberts about maintaining his independence from major record labels, inspiring young people, and maintaining a close relationship with his family. He also revealed that he (and his mom) attended the birthday party of President Obama — who recently included Chance’s hit “Acid Rain” on his summer Spotify playlist. (“It’s probably the coolest playlist I’ve ever been included on,” he muses.)
The Chicago native, who refuses to sign with major record labels, says the music industry is “very separate” from the music, and “by staying on the music side of it, I’ve found success.”
Coloring Book, his latest mixtape available on all streaming services, incorporates elements of gospel; Chance also said his music is about “freedom” which includes the freedom to talk about God. He also told the host that his commitment to art and connecting with his audience stems from his family. “I come from a family of organizers and abolitionists and social workers,” he says. “It always felt integral for me to become a person of the people.” The clip also featured interviews with some Chicago area high school students, who perform at open mic nights facilitated by the artist.
After the interview, Chance was joined by Francis Starlite of Francis and The Lites, and the duo performed a rendition of “Summer Friends.” The two will tour together starting on Sept. 15.
