Common Will Interview Serena Williams For ESPN’s Hour-Long Special ‘The Undefeated’

On Sunday, ESPN will air an exclusive conversation between Common and tennis star Serena Williams in the form of an hour-long special called The Undefeated In-Depth: Serena With Common. The special is the third in a series of projects by ESPN’s The Undefeated initiative, which is designed to explore the intersectionality between sports, race, and culture. Over the course of several multimedia projects, The Undefeated is intended to showcase intimate conversations between African American leaders that have achieved success in their chosen field.

“Serena with Common” was taped recently in both Brooklyn, New York and Compton, California, and will see Williams discussing her rise to become one of the world’s greatest athletes, coming to terms with her body, and the challenges she faces as being an African American at the top of her sport, among other things.

In addition to the conversation between Williams and Common, The Undefeated will also publish a series of taped conversations hosted and executive produced by Common with the likes of Harry Belafonte; New York Times columnist and political commentator Charles Blow; activist and #BlackLivesMatter leader DeRay McKesson; as well as artist and photographer Loma Simpson.

“Serena with Common” airs Sunday December 18th at 9PM EST.
