2013 was the year Danny Brown broke into the mainstream of the hip-hop world. His album Old introduced him to more casual hip-hop fans, and it became one of the most critically acclaimed LPs of the year. For the last three years, fans have waited with baited breath for the follow-up, and today, they have plenty to cheer about. Brown’s next album has a release date and a title, as the album, entitled Atrocity Exhibition, will be released on September 30.

If the title sounds familiar to you, it’s because Brown named it after a Joy Division song from their second and final album, Closer, which was released in 1980, the same year that frontman Ian Curtis committed suicide. Brown says he is a longtime fan of the song, and its dark themes will match what he has intended for the album:

“I just relate to that song a lot,” says Brown. “That song, [Ian Curtis is] pretty much talking about how he feels like he’s part of a freak show almost. People just wanna come see him and they just wanna see him be a certain type of way. I totally relate to that. That’s just how I felt with this album, ’cause a lot of people expect for me to be some crazy drugged-out I-don’t-know.

“At the end of the day, its just something that I really took my time with,” adds the rapper. “I know this day and age, a lot of artists can’t really take time off to make music … they’ll get replaced. With me, [I’m] somebody that’s able to sit down and be able to take my time, ’cause aint nobody gonna be out here sounding like me, ain’t nobody gonna be out here doing what I do. I’m confident in this project to know that I’mma satisfy the people that’s already fans of my music. So, if you’re a fan of Danny Brown, you in for a treat.”

Atrocity Exhibition will likely be an incredibly star-studded affair, as it will feature collaborations with likes of Cypress Hill’s B-Real, along with Alchemist and Petite Noir. Perhaps the most exciting news is that the track “Really Doe,” will feature both Kendrick Lamar and Earl Sweatshirt who are collaborating on an individual track for the first time.
