The Commercial Success Of Lil Yachty And D.R.A.M.’s ‘Broccoli’ Proves Joy Can Win

D.R.A.M. earned some measure of notoriety when his song “Cha Cha” was “remixed” by Drake and turned into the massively popular “Hotline Bling.”

Understandably, the Virginia rapper eventually expressed frustration with the situation. D.R.A.M. didn’t let the swagger jacking keep him down, however, continuing to release tracks until he cooked up the right combination on “Broccoli” with Lil Yachty. The joyful song has been resounding success, eventually reaching the top of the Billboard Rap Songs chart. For good measure, it knocked Drake’s “Too Good” with Rihanna from no. 1.

Now D.R.A.M. (and Lil Yachty) have even more to celebrate, as the track has officially certified double platinum by the RIAA.

To celebrate, D.R.AM. took to Instagram, stating “2 million stalks of BROCCOLI sold, and counting! Double Platinum! Thank you Lord.” Lil Yachty chimed in as well succinctly adding, “o ok #uDigg.”

It must feel good for the rapper, especially since Drake for all intents and purposes admitted to Fader that he borrowed from the “Cha Cha” by comparing it to a Jamaican riddim.

“You know, like in Jamaica, you’ll have a riddim and it’s like, everyone has to do a song on that. Imagine that in rap, or imagine that in R&B. Imagine if we got one beat and every single person — me, this guy, this guy, all these guy — had to do a song on that one beat. So sometimes I’ll pick a beat that’s a bit, like, sunnier, I guess is the word you used, than usual, and I just try my hand at it.”
