Jamila Woods Turns Self-Care Into Church For Her ‘Holy’ Video

Jamila Woods’ “Holy” — off of her standout debut HEAVN — already did the hard work of turning self-care into church. Over the ever-present horns that seem to swaddle all of Chicago’s most-promising acts, Woods exalts herself with the relaxing mantra of “Woke up this morning with my mind set on loving me.” But her new video for the track further underlines the idea of taking care of yourself as holy ritual, with Woods’ singing from a bathtub as her hair ascends toward heaven.

Woods released the clip for “Holy” to celebrate the fact that HEAVN will finally see physical release via Jagjaguwar and Closed Sessions. And she explained the video’s premise in a press release announcing their partnership.

“I wrote ‘Holy’ to remind myself that my worth is not dependent on anyone or anything outside of me,” Woods said. “For the video I wanted to represent self-care as a sacred act, to make ordinary daily rituals in bedrooms and bathtubs feel magical.”

In addition to the video, Woods shared a new version of the track that you can hear here:
