‘Black Lives Matter’: D’Angelo’s Debut Performance On ‘SNL’ Was Powerful

Just how good was D’Angelo on SNL? His hat is the second thing people will bring up while discussing his performance. The first? “Holy sh*t, that was great.” The Black Messiah and his Vanguard band played two songs, “Really Love” and “The Charade,” both of which were powerful, but it’s the latter that really blew me away. The chalk outline, the “black lives matter” shirts, the fact that it sounded like the best song Prince never wrote — D’Angelo’s welcome to come back to SNL whenever he pleases, with or without the hat.
