Kid Cudi Checks Himself Into Rehab As He Battles ‘Suicidal Urges’

On a night where many in music were celebrating with the BET Hip-Hop Awards, Kid Cudi quietly made the announcement he has checked himself into rehab. He shared the news with fans via social media, posting a lengthy message on Facebook. In the note, he describes how he felt “ashamed” for letting fans down but knew taking measures to better his mental health was something he had to do for himself and his loved ones as he battled “a ragin’ violent storm inside.”

“It’s been difficult for me to find the words to what Im about to share with you because I feel ashamed. Ashamed to be a leader and hero to so many while admitting I’ve been living a lie. It took me a while to get to this place of commitment, but it is something I have to do for myself, my family, my best friend/daughter and all of you, my fans. Yesterday I checked myself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges.”

His note displays a level of candor he’s come to be known for as he describes himself as “a damaged human swimming in a pool of emotions everyday of my life.” Rarely do we see rap artists admit they’re “scared” and “sad,” but the 32-year-old Cudi’s never fashioned himself to be typical by any means.

The news comes as he prepares to release his new album, Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’, which was delayed last week due to sample clearance issues. In his message, he noted that he wanted to get the project squared away before taking a leave of absence. “I won’t be around to promote much,” he writes, “but the good folks at Republic and my manager Dennis will inform you about upcoming releases…The album is still on the way. Promise.”

Of course, most fans are more concerned with Cudi, the person and not just the musician. His decision to seek help for his health trumps any music releases, new videos, and the like.
