It’s been less than 24 hours since Kanye West was forcibly put under psychiatric evaluation after his personal trainer called paramedics with concerns regarding the rapper’s erratic behavior and lack of sleep. And we’re now learning more about what led up to Kanye’s reported mental breakdown.

Unlike wife Kim Kardashian who stayed behind to be with her husband, Kanye’s mother-in-law Kris Jenner attended the Angel Ball gala and spoke with Extra about the rapper cancelling his Saint Pablo tour. The quick chat was before news of Kanye’s hospitalized broke out, but still offers insight to Kanye’s state of mind prior to being put under psychiatric evaluation.

“He’s exhausted, he’s just really tired. He’s had a grueling tour and it’s been a grind so he just needs some rest,” the Kardashian matriarch told Extra Monday night. Jenner’s brief statement matches that of reports that Kanye was seen by a doctor for severe sleep deprivation.

Meanwhile, sources tell People pretty much the same thing. “He is exhausted and currently dealing with sleep deprivation. He went to the hospital at will under the advice of his physician. He’s fine.”

The source also claims Kanye feels he’s under “spiritual attack” and has been dealing with “a lot more subtle issues” and not just Kim Kardashian getting robbed in Paris. November is also a tough month for Kanye because November 2007 was when his mother, Donda West, passed away. “This time of year always brings him a lot of pain,” the source adds. “He keeps that pain internalized, but sometimes will talk about how hard this time of year is for him. He works through the pain every November.”

“He feels like it’s a trying time for his spirit, but that can be a good thing. He isn’t one to run away from these things. He leans in and listens, and comes away a stronger, better man. But it hurts him; his spirit is vexed. But that’s where growth comes from,” the source says.

“Sometimes, darkness creeps in, and Kanye wrestles against it. He talks about that a lot. It’s exhausting, and it takes everything he’s got. He’s just so tired now; he’s very low energy and feels like there’s a grieving in his spirit. It’s very hard to explain, but something has happened recently, where he’s not the ‘Ye that everyone knows.”

Sounds like it’s deeper than sleep deprivation.
