Questlove, Common And Black Thought Made A Young Street Drummer’s ‘Dream Come True’

A little while back, rapper Common was navigating the streets of New Orleans when he happened upon a young drummer going HAM on his kit. He took a video and posted it up to social media, which got some online traction. Yesterday, Common returned to the spot where he found the kid, Darius Lindsley, and surprised him by bringing along Roots drummer Questlove, who plopped down and began drumming next to him.

Eventually a crowd formed, and the Roots front man Black Thought jumped in on the festivities. “What we do every day onstage, there’s lights, there’s lots of other musicians, there’s an audience, there’s a microphone and mic stands; layers of the onion we have to kind of hide behind,” Black Thought said to the Times-Picayune. “So for him to come out here, it’s the ultimate vulnerability. It’s all him.” Common added his own admiration of Darius, writing on Instagram, “I’ve got to know his story and more importantly, found out that he’s a great person as well as a great student.”

For Darius, the entire experience was surreal. On Instagram he posted up a photo of himself with Common, Questo, and Black Thought with a caption that read, “Dreams do come true.” Then he shared another one where he revealed that Questlove gifted him with a new drum set. “[Common], it was awesome chilling with you and [Questlove],” he wrote. “I want to say thank you again @questlove for the drum set and drum sticks. Can’t wait to see y’all again in the future.”
