Talib Kweli is one of the most socially conscious rappers in the history of the genre. He’s also someone unafraid to call out injustice when he sees it. That’s why it should come as no surprise that he had plenty to say recently when TMZ’s cameras caught up with him coming out of LAX and broached the subject of our current President, Donald Trump.
“I think it’s made people understand the bar is set way lower for white people,” The Black Star rapper said. “Trump could be mediocre. He could even be a failure. Obama had to work so much more harder than everybody else.” He then added, “[Obama] had so many more obstacles in front of him than Donald Trump has, and he still was called a monkey. He was still called a liar to his face by our congressmen. Donald Trump lies every day, and nobody called him a liar to his face.” Before positing that, “That’s the whole reason Donald Trump’s president. It’s America paying us back for the n***** president.”
Needless to say, the remarks got a lot of people hot around the collar, but Kweli wasn’t about to back down off of his position anytime soon. He spent much of Tuesday defending his thoughts on social media, while educating some who came after him with personal attacks.
