Between collaborations with Freddie Gibbs and Action Bronson and putting out his own album, Statik Selektah had a fairly busy 2011. Next year will likely keep the New York DJ just as occupied with the upcoming album with Termanology (as 1982), entitled 2012. Out of all of all of his collab albums, last year’s self-titled 1982 was by far my favorite, so naturally for round two I’m hoping the duo can pick up right where they left off. Tentatively, all signs point to the positive, as the first single, “Play Your Role,” gets appropriately classy black-and-white visuals to help enhance Term and Reks’ verses as they kick knowledge on some defining qualities of the emcee. It’s the little things like Statik’s masterful control of the Styles P sample that make this record what is and the video is more of the same, with the quick shots of the spray painter and studio clips as well (I don’t know what it is but for some reason BTS footage always seems to grab my attention).
