“I’m Just A Bill…”

I'm just an enorcement of intellectual property rights - bill

Thursday afternoon the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 14 – 4 for The Enforcement of Intellectual Rights Act which would allow the U.S. Department to prosecute copyright infringement cases without having to go through civil court. The act would also create a Cabinet position which would report directly to the President. They would be responsible for creating a worldwide plan to combat piracy.

This bill is supported by Hollywood and labor unions (RIAA), while digital rights groups believe that the legislation goes too far. The bill is expected to go up for vote in the Senate shortly.

For what it’s worth: Democratic Vice-Presidental candidate Joe Biden, a Senator from Virginia Delaware, was the only Judiciary Committee member to abstain from voting. As of now there hasn’t been any word as to why he declined to vote and whether he supports it or not.

While we may see it as an issue of music, it does cover things like counterfeiting money as well. So while I may not agree with the extent the bill can be enforced, I can see the need for a bill of this nature. Hopefully this will be struck down so that it will be reworked again and be similiar to the bill that went through The House of Representatives last year.
