Fashawn Feat. Blu – “Samsonite Man” Video

By 05.14.10

It’s funny how things come full circle.

I remember the post I wrote comparing Fashawn’s first album to Illmatic and the subsequent reaction I received in the comments. Of course, I expected this, as I was aware that the majority of people most likely wouldn’t be open to my point simply because I was apparently committing Hip-Hop blasphemy by associating a new artist with arguably the greatest album of all-time.

However, the only point that I was trying to make, that I still stand by, is that the Central Valley wordsmith painted the most accurate picture of our home that I have heard put to wax in this era; the same thing that Nas did for New York City in the early ‘90s with his debut. Unfortunately, our area of the map usually gets usurped by The Bay Area or Southern California’s spotlight, when we really are three completely different places. So when I see Fashawn on Youtube rocking shows in Germany, New York and all over the world, accurately representing for our geographic location, I can’t help but to be proud.

It was fitting that I would stumble upon this new video to Fashawn’s latest single, “Samsonite Man,” after returning from a trip to Sacramento, where I watched him perform for the first time. The beautifully shot piece details the struggle that comes with performing all over the world, and is a perfect reminder that Boy Meets World is still in stores and needs your support.

Bonus: The homie Emilio Sparks caught up with Fashawn a little while ago to chop it up about said album, his place on the infamous XXL cover, and reminisce about the actual “Boy Meets World” television show.
