It’s been hard to put into words the devastation the BP oil spill in the Gulf has caused. Every time I go to a seafood restaurant in New Orleans, a waiter tells me about fears that the business will crumble due to the expected seafood shortages. People are freaking out and angry at the second man-made disaster to hit the region in just five years.
But telling you that doesn’t mean nearly as much as showing you these pictures of despair and anguish the spill is causing for local wildlife. I’ve never been an animal person, but these pictures bring tears to my eyes. I’m not perfect and don’t plan on being anyone’s judge, jury or executioner, but I can’t help but think that there’s a cozy spot in the warmest circle of Hell waiting for the execs responsible.
Beyond these pictures is the infuriating headline that Tony Hayward, BP’s chief executive and someone who has revealed himself to be a despicable human being, has decided to hand over the clean up responsibilities to someone else in the organization so that he can focus on other important business decisions at BP- business decisions that are apparently more important than saving wildlife, replenishing jobs and helping restore the way of life of so many in the Gulf. It must be nice to f*ck up on such a grand scale and be able to pass the buck at your nearest convenience. Want further reason to hate Mr. Hayward? Here’s an excerpt of some of his most poignant quotes in regards to the spill:
“This was not our accident … This was Transocean’s rig. Their systems. Their people. Their equipment.” 4 May
“The Gulf of Mexico is a big ocean. The amount of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.” 14 May
“No one wants this over more than I do. I would like my life back.” 30 May
“So far I’m unscathed … Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” 4 June
Poor Hayward. Those insensitive fishermen and U.S. presidents have been so cruel to him.
