Freddie Gibbs Feat. YP – “Something New”

By / 08.27.10

It’s fascinating to follow the trajectory of some of those old soul or jazz joints that were hot when our parents were our age, and trace them through time to see how various artists flip, alter, and incorporate them into music that is relevant today. Take for example, “Bumpy’s Lament” by Isaac Hayes. It was first covered by Soul Mann & His Brothers, then famously sampled on “Xxplosive” from 2001, and later on Erykah Badu’s “Bag Lady”. Now Million $ Mano has flipped it once more for The BFK’s latest assault on Hip-Hop.

Determined not to lapse even for a second, Freddie adds to his buzz by putting out Something New, the song that we previewed in the Closed Sessions documentary, a few days ago. The ever-versatile Freddie Gibbs pleasantly switches up from his darker themes to a more laid back, melodic and mellow sound that delivers a fresh element for his listeners. It’s always nice to see an artist steer away from their stereotypical sound and experiment with something unique. Gibbs shows that he’s more than just a one-dimensional artist as he jaggedly laces his seething flow, vividly contrasting with the overlaying gentle and temperate sounds on the boards.
