Nelly & Kelly Pick Up Where They Left Off

By / 11.08.10

They aren’t Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, but Nelly and Kelly Rowland are synonymous with one another. Let your cool down for one second, their 2002 classic duet “Dilemma” – yes, classic – was one of those records that was impossible to escape from. This was during the peak of Nelly-mania and it owned radio, TV and while I was only 16 at the time, every party. My mother even still plays the song to this day. It was so much of a highlight of both careers that attempting to recreate the feeling seemed like a lost cause.

A lot has changed since 2002 however. Nelly’s appeal has done a 180. Jerseys ran their course. Even the masked guy from the St. Lunatics is looking for a job now. Still, the Midwest’s most commercially successful rapper not named West is continuing to log in studio hours for Nelly 5.0. With the Jim Jonsin-produced “Gone,” the rapper/actor may actually have his first hit crossover hit since “Grillz.”

Nelly’s crooning vocals – while off at times – mesh well with Kelly’s crisp voice. It’s one of those relationship songs that always tend to be released once the weather begins to permanently take a turn for the colder. This has pop radio written all over it, and while it is not “Dilemma,” the record has the opportunity to find a great deal of success given the proper support. Bet that.
