The One Drug Eminem Can’t Quit

By 12.31.10

Sometimes the dream of making it is more fun than it is to actually make it…

If there is one thing about Eminem that has remained consistent over the years, it is the fact that he hates the idea of being “famous.” He opened up about it on 2002′s “Say Goodbye Hollywood” and the ill effects of his international star power have repeatedly shown themselves since. For awhile, I figured it was all apart of his niche. You know, the whole “feel sorry for me because I can never be normal again” angle. Then, after learning about who Marshall Mathers the man was, I’m sold on the opposite. All buddy ever wanted to do was make sure Hailie lived a good life. And he did that, he just reluctanty had to accept the cons with the pros in the process.

With all that in mind, rapping pays the bills and his latest feat on the job landed him the year’s highest selling rap album and one we’ve put in the rafters here at TSS. “Cocaine” was slated to appear on Recovery, but for some reason never received the opportunity. Frankly, it doesn’t sound like much I’ve heard Em record before, which isn’t a negative connotation whatsoever. Blessed with the inspiration of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Fame” – a song that was never officially released – Detroit’s proudest Red Wing lyrically expresses the tangled web of success and personal hell he unknowingly walked himself into. Given the duo’s propensity to create great music through stressful points in their lives, it should come as no surprise the record shines brightly with its melancholy undertones.

Who knows if this song would have resulted in an extra half cig had it made the cut? It’s water under the bridge at this point. Still, I wouldn’t mind hearing Eminem create more music in the vein of this in the future.
