Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway is probably best remembered nowadays for his short-lived, albeit impressive shoe line thanks to Nike’s slew of retro releases. What may be lost on some younger cats is that it was Penny’s on-court exploits that warranted him getting that line of kicks in the first place. He was tall with off-the-charts athleticism, controlled the rock like it was a yo-yo on his hand and did it all with an effortless cool that made him an instant fan favorite.
On top of that, MJ was trying to rule the diamond so it was all eyes on #1.
But today we’re here to focus on the kicks, specifically the Foamposites. With their upcoming release next Saturday, the Foams will always hold a special place in the hearts of sneakerheads, dopeboys and the DMV area thanks to their radical design. The Laced series put together a pretty nice retrospective on both the shoe and player, highlighting how influential both were in their heyday. What brought back memories was seeing footage of a young Mike Bibby rocking them during Arizona’s championship run. If you’re feeling nostalgic and thinking about scooping a pair of these up, don’t wait til the last minute. Nike’s had no problem creating a frenzy for these and lines are sure to build.
