True story. Almost four years ago, when my Fresh wasn’t as respected by a one John Gotty™ and I was still a relatively new pen for the less major version of this site, writer’s block got the best of my eagerness to produce. So, instead of trying to BS out a joint about Rich Boy (or whoever was hot in 2007), I attempted my own version of TSS’s then-famous Loosies posts, strategically piecing together my favorite songs of the moment to share amongst the masses. Never one to flinch from his vision, G$ posted his own pack of Loosies that day and mine went straight to the comments section. Over the years I’ve learned his instinct is typically correct, while “I digress” has become a regular part of my vocabulary.
Either way, one of the artists I was trying to showcase that day was Stretch Money, a then-Motor-City-newcomer who bridged the streets and the ‘burbs that scorching summer with his sing-along dedication to desire, “Takes Money To Make Money.” Based on the burn that blue-collar joint had been getting across local radio, I figured the song would be easily absorbed by readers. Well, beyond maybe one mention by Teef, Strech’s song didn’t really take off beyond Detroit and in the long run – neither did his brand.
But, then the other night on WJLB’s What’s Next On Menu showcase, I found Stretch had returned to the airwaves with a horn-heavy parade of confidence titled “I’m Talkin’ Bout Fresh.” Instead of the typical bragging and boasting, though, this track from this Eastsider’s Smoke One mixtape carries more of a subdued swagger and explains ballin’ on budget. Advice everyone could use these days.
Keep in mind the term budget is relative.
