A “Hip-Hop breeding ground” isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Portland, Oregon. The Pacific Northwest city is more synonymous with Nike and Trail Blazer basketball than a lyricist’s haven. However, Portland underground collective Animal Farm team with an industry mainstay, BKNY’s Talib Kweli, to craft “Test of Time,” their single off their upcoming May 17 release, Culture Shock.
The soulful sample intermingles with each member’s deft bars, as horns provide an anthemic charge through the track’s three-and-a-half minute duration. The group stays true to their underground – and underdog – roots with mainstream derision: “Not so simplistic, I’m mainstream music’s nightmare/my soul’s not for sale, tell these labels I don’t fight fair.” However, it’s the fluidity of each MC’s verse that lends a hand toward cementing the City of Roses as a Hip-Hop hot spot yet to be discovered. The succeeding single, “Pop Music,” finds the collective tinkering with a more slapstick, jovial sound, but their message to keep it the culture pure still manages to seep through above all.
