To make a video, all Skyzoo needs is a camera, a chair, a little bit of light and an assist from director Kenneth Price. No fancy locale, video vixens, or what not. For “The Definitive Prayer,” the first cut released from his upcoming mixtape The Great Debater, his lyrics take center stage.
Reminiscent of “Langston’s Pen” from Live From The Tape Deck, Skyzoo never stops flowing from the jump, displaying an intricate rhyme scheme, a dense writing style and finely-tuned metaphors for days. And although it’s one long verse, this is a track that still commands the listener’s attention, song structure be damned. Following him through the hairpin twists-and-turns of it is captivating, especially when coupled with 9th Wonder’s beat. Built around a sample of David Axelrod’s “Holy Thursday,” the instrumental shifts and transitions to match the vocals with majestic horns, snapping drums and bass funky enough to leave listeners deep in the groove.
Just in case you want the MP3 for this cut, it’s available for download here. The Great Debater is set to drop on June 7.
