Last night, when I heard The Mayor of Gary, Indiana, was thuggin’ on UStream with Statik Selektah – about to start and finish an EP cordially titled Lord Givith, Lord Taketh Away – I had no choice but to geek out and become a fly on the wall for a few minutes. Not much came from it, other than hearing a snippet of an unfinished ProTools session and seeing Fred eating some Chinese food, but the marathon-mixtape concept in itself is extremely intriguing. It wasn’t too long ago when Statik rocked a 24-hour-energy-session with Saigiddy, so obviously a certain caliber of MC has to be up to par for the hard work and Gangsta Gibbs is a perfect fit.
Right on schedule, the release’s first teaser is appropriately called “Rap Money,” a cut-up slow-jam that finds Freddie and Diggy Daz dedicating some bars to their legal hustle. With such a time crunch, you might expect quality to be flimsy, but alas…you’d be wrong. Do both them and yourself a favor and support these hip-hop hustlers when their seven-track tape becomes available for public consumption on iTunes at midnight.
