In case you’ve been avoiding the news for the past week or so, Hurricane Irene has been dominating headlines. All day yesterday I sat couped in the house as the massive storm slowly and powerfully made her way up the East Coast knocking out power – not mine, thank God – causing millions of dollars in structural damage and tragically taking several lives in the process.
Things could have been catastrophically worse however, eerily considering Irene collided with the Eastern seaboard of America nearly six years to the day Katrina crippled the Gulf Coast; the impact of which that area is still feeling. Still, the sheer power of mother nature can be amazing at times (good and bad). Take this photo for example. Thanks to the luxury that is social media and smart phones, what we have here is a jaw dropping visual of Irene preparing to make landfall in North Carolina. If I didn’t know better, I’d say that looked like the end of the world.

Bonus: I happened to take this photo Thursday night while leaving work. Take a sigh of relief though. The ABC store was not harmed in the taking of this picture or the resulting storm thereafter.
