In the midst of a pennant race for the AL West, Josh Hamilton has had more pressure hanging over him than helping his team take another crack at winning the World Series. Taking part in a promotion with local store CC Carpert, any customer who purchased new flooring or counter tops in September had a chance to get them for free if Hamilton hit a grand slam. Sounds pretty simple, except they failed to mention that Hamilton hadn’t hit one since 2008.
Last night in the fourth inning against the Cleveland Indians, Hamilton stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and he delivered like a champ taking David Huff’s pitch over the left field wall. Most importantly, the Rangers left nothing to doubt by winning 9-1 and maintaining a three game division lead over the LA Angels. Afterwards, Hamilton admitted that the gravity of his at-bat wasn’t lost on him:
“The situation doesn’t come up often, so when it does you can’t help but think about it,” Hamilton said. “I’m in the business of giving back. I like to help people as much as I can by giving back. So that’s cool.” ESPN
Steve Fitzgerald, CC Carpets owner, didn’t know the exact amount he’d have to refund but estimates that it’s close to $500,000. Momma didn’t raise no fool either because Fitzgerald wisely took out an insurance policy for the promotion.
“We wanted to do something that would be fun, but still possible,” Fitzgerald said. “There were people trying to get me to do something else, but I thought it had to be Hamilton and a grand slam. My daughter, Morgan, pushed for Hamilton too. It took some phone calls, but we were thrilled to make it work.”
It’s always good to hear a story where everyone comes out a winner, except for the insurance company, which in my book is still a win. Check out the CC Carpet ad that set everything in motion below.
