As an artist, you hate to hear comparisons so quickly into your career. However, as a listener, it’s extremely hard not to verify your thoughts by making them. Having said that, literally less than 15 seconds into Allen Stone’s “Contact High,” I was immediately thinking how much this stringy hipster sounds identical to a young Stevie Wonder. Yes, while unpolished in appearance and about as Caucasian as it gets, this Washington state crooner cleans house with his tenor vocals and metaphorically-rich lyrics on this timeless single from his upcoming self-titled debut. So much so, with the currently electronic climate of pop music, you could undoubtedly pull a fast one on friends by claiming this Church-bred enigma as a throwback.
To see if the rest of Al’s tunes maintain the same warmth, check out his Allen Stone album when it drops on Tuesday on iTunes. Or, if you’re too busy or broke to do that, just wait. Since he’s oozing out talent and already headlining shows at SOBS in NYC, you’ll undoubtedly hear more from him sooner than later.
