Four Loko Folds Under FTC Pressure, Updates Alcohol Content Warning

By 10.04.11

Four Loko will now be the most colorful can in the malt liquor cooler at the corner store as the Phusion Projects, the drink’s maker, decided to change the label to reflect the beverage’s true alcohol content. The change comes after the company faced lawsuits and extreme pressure from the Federal Trade Commission. Previously, the company asserted their drink was only the equivalent of “one or two beers,” the common refrain DUI suspects sing to the cops once they’re pulled over. In fact, a 23.5 ounce can of Four Loko has 11% to 12% alcohol by volume – compared with an average light beer, which has 4.2% – which is the rough equal of four to five beers. The drink’s new label will reflect the change and the packaging will include a resealable container so customer’s can drink more responsibly.
