SL Jones – Flight Risk Mixtape

By / 12.14.11

SL Jones has been a busy young man. In May, he dropped The Number 23 with Don Cannon and he came right back in September with the Pandamonium EP, spitting with fire and rage over Clams Casino’s Rainforest instrumentals. Never one to sit back and relax, Jones is already giving listeners more Little Rock bangers in the form of today’s 10-track Flight Risk EP.

The previous releases featured a handful of high profile guest appearances (Killer Mike, Wacka Flacka, Trae, Pill and others), but Flight Risk features Jones on a solo mission, as only his Arkansas brethren E-Dubb joins in the festivities on the mic. Production from folks like Shawty Redd, Lex Luger and Smiff-N-Cash brings a variety of sounds to the table, and SL matches his melodic flow with the energetic beats, switching from his trademark smooth lyricism to a more rapid-fire approach seamlessly, even doing some light singing when the situation calls for it. Highlights include “Stamped Valid,” where Jones outlines his street credentials over a Luger heater, and the opener, “23rd Hour,” a chorus-less exhibition of bars with Honorable C-Note bringing the 808-heavy backdrop.

Make sure you absorb this project with a quickness. It’s clear Jones is waiting for no man and the next project is right around the corner. It may even come with a stamp from a certain online entity with some well-respected fresh.
