Beastie Boys’ Mike D Talks Hip-Hop Semantics On “The Colbert Report”

By 01.13.12

The past week has been contentious. Republicans attacked other Republicans for (oddly) being too capitalistic and the Iranian government threatened to block the Straight of Hormuz. However, it was the battle royale between The New York Times’ crossword mastermind, Will Shortz, and blogger Boobs Radley over the perceived meaning of the word “illin'” that sent this week’s heated cultural dialogue into overdrive.

After Shortz used “illin'” in last Saturday’s crossword puzzle to mean “wack,” Radley attacked him for his semantic incorrectness. Not one to be left from the debate, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert enlisted the services of Beastie Boy Mike D to settle, once and for all, the correct meaning of “illin’.” Watch as one of Hip-Hop’s elder statesmen determines the victor, with sophisticated pipe and tweed overcoat in tow. Now that’s “ill.”
