5 Thoughts On The Nike Zoom KD IV “Year Of The Dragon”

By / 02.13.12

1. If there’s an award for “Surprise Shoe Of The Year,” it’d have to go to the Zoom KD IV line. After three years of decent but unspectacular reviews and buzz, the Durant model has become arguably Nike Basketball’s most sought after offering. The KD IVs have been on a tear since the Nerfs released a few months ago and the momentum hasn’t slowed one bit with consumers. While I struck out on the Nerfs and Weathermans, I was able to get my hands on the Year Of The Dragons that sold out on Nike.com in less than two minutes. The KDIV were the first to sell out during Friday’s the BHM online release and the “Galaxy” version will probably be the first to go during All-Star weekend too. For many, the Durants have leap-frogged Kobe and LeBron for must-have sig shoe.

2. Again it’s the details that steal the show here as Durant seems to really have had a hands-on approach, adding little tidbits like the “Big Chucky” on the heel for his coach and mentor that passed away, the WP on the toe for his parents and “Barbara” on the toe for his grandmother. Each detail is subtle and adds a personal touch that makes me feel like Durant was actually in the room planning out how his shoe will look.

3. I can’t ball in low tops. And I’d have to imagine that Durant or any other tall player like myself would need some extra ankle support to play. While the KDs are killing the game right now, the Brons are still the shoe I feel most comfortable hooping and hanging in.

4. One reason it’s been easy to make multiple cops of the KDIVs is the low price point. At $95, I can cop these and *hopefully* the ASG for the same price as one pair of LeBrons. It’s nice to work so hard to grab a pair of shoes and not even have to worry about breaking the bank for them. It’s perfect for someone like me that’s not as much of a sneakerhead as someone like Gotty™.

5. Pictures just don’t do the crazy YOTD colorway justice. I made it a point to try to find something to match with them on Saturday but realized it was fruitless and I’d be best to just wear solids and let the shoes speak for themselves. I can’t wait for shorts weather to come so the lining can show. The mango underlay really makes the current abyss green shade. Even though the colorway is loud, it’s surprisingly versatile. I’m actually going to have to resist the urge to rock these every day.

Bonus Note: As a nerd and a childhood fan of Dragonball Z, I couldn’t help but run around the house making unending references to the show while holding the YOTDs in the air like they were Baby Simba. I also cranked out Soulja Boy’s “B*tch I Think I’m Goku” like it’s nobody’s business. See, he does have practical use.
