Now that I’m older and able to put it all in perspective, my indoctrination into the shoe game occurred early in life. And, in a lot of ways, I have to blame my parents because they’re the ones who gave me a subscription to Sports Illustrated when I was maybe eight. In their hearts, they wanted to foster my adolescent love for reading and sports – which they did – but a definite by-product was my exposure to Nike’s earliest and arguably best advertising. Over the past few weeks and months, I’ve been devouring books, using eBay to buy old magazines to read the interviews and features. Studying history on company culture and design influences. Looking at marketing approaches and old adverts not just from Nike, but a lot of sneaker companies.
Much like the old ACG ads posted in December, I have memories attached the majority of the joints featured here and get a lot of “oh shit” moments. I can’t take credit for finding the adverts seen in the slides that follow, unless you consider being able to navigate Google’s image search function a skill. All praise here goes to ClassicKicks (which looks like has been shifted to Tumblr now), a random Photobucket account I found and a lot of “right-click, save as.”
With that said, enjoy the visual stroll through the past. For a Friday, there's no better way to kill time on the man's dime.
