Monta Ellis Drops 48, Warriors Still Lose To Thunder 119-116

By / 02.08.12

The late game that had Twitter buzzing into the wee hours of the morning had all the justifiable reasons to do so. Monta Ellis appeared damn near on his way to 60 points through three quarters hitting a barrage of shots from inside and outside. Yet, even dropping 40 through three and 48 for the game wasn’t enough as Monta’s Golden State squad let a confidence boosting win against one of the league’s elite teams, the Oklahoma City Thunder, slip through their hands.

1. At one point, it appeared the Warriors would run laps around OKC for the victory. As anyone who has ever watched the NBA can tell you though, the game is all about runs and led by Durant and Westbrook, the Thunder marched right back making for one hell of an explosive fourth quarter.

2. Despite Monta’s near half a century, robust stat lines were all around the court. David Lee’s triple double of 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists made him the first Warriors power forward since a young and nimble Chris Webber did so on December 23, 1993. For OKC, Russell Westrbrook logged 31 points to go along with seven assists. His superstar counterpart, Durant, notched a near triple double with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists including what proved to be the game winning (bank) shot with 14 seconds left. And for good measure, supersub James Harden added 19 points and seven assists.

3. Why Monta was inbounding the ball for the last second shot was “peculiar.”

4. Oklahoma City is proving two things. Young legs in this season mean the world. Not saying Golden State is halfway to a retirement home, but it brings me to my second point. OKC is a young team who is learning how to win close games, which may not bode positively for the rest of the season. Well, at least until the next Durant/Westbrook controversy becomes the hot topic of debate.

5. Is there any non-elite team who plays more exciting games than the Warriors?
