Mos Def – “N****s In Poorest” Video

By / 02.22.12

The artist formerly known as Mos Def, Yasiin Bey, just released the video accompaniment to his track, “N****s In Poorest,” and it’s weird. Well, it’s not “weird” in the Merriam-Webster sense, but consider it ironic or out-of-place “weird.”

The clip’s graphic, disorienting and shocking scene splices relay Mos’ socio-conscious message and that should be expected. The Brooklyn MC has always been a thoughtful rapper, so the entire video makes sense. However, when listeners consider his G.O.O.D. Music affiliation, Mos’ Throne remix is weird because of its denunciation of the original’s one-percenter point-of-view. Simply put, it’s like a slap in the face to his boss’ work.

Maybe that’s naive. Mos and Kanye have had a rapport since The College Dropout and, before Kanye went couture crazy, he’d also been privy to dropping insightful bombs (“Diamonds (Remix)”, anyone?). There’s the possibility that ‘Ye ok-ed the juxtaposed version, but Mos daggers such as “what the f*ck is Margiela?” doesn’t scream endearing.

Mos is an odd cat – that much is known and cemented after the Phantom of the Opera mask he donned at last year’s SXSW. He also speaks his mind when he sees fit, even if those views clash with the guy responsible for any relevance Mos has had in the past two years. Odd, weird, erratic, earnest: Mos is all of these and more. Use the “N****s In Poorest” as one more piece of evidence that assure those characterizations.
