Uh huh, yes. Almost on cue with the great weather much of the country is experiencing, T.I. and the folks at Grand Hustle drop off the tape that’ll command the majority of my weekend excursions. If you remember, one of the standout tracks from Tip’s F*ck Da City Up tape was the Hit Boy-produced “Harry Potter” which featured the unknown-at-the-time group, D.O.P.E. Consisting of Spodee, Yung Bookie and Rich Kid Shawty, the trio now boast a full length project to digest. The true test comes in the car, but listening to the first four or five tracks – especially “Block Blazer” which features Clifford and pays homage to Juvenile’s “Ha” – all ride with slapping beats from The Neptunes, Hit Boy, Nard & B, Cardo and more. And worth noting, their collective flows and harmonies appear catered to each. I could be all off base with this, but they seem to reside in the same lane as a Travis Porter (who ironically show their faces on tape)with calculated ignorance.
D.O.P.E. isn’t exactly the next coming of A Tribe Called Quest, but let the young boys live in the moment and create the music that plays in the background while pre-gaming. They’ve got my attention for now, at least.
