Kentucky’s Anthony Davis Takes Player Of The Year

By 03.30.12

Kentucky’s Anthony Davis impacts basketball games in many different ways, and AP voters respected this fact enough to award him with Player of the Year honors. In doing so, the wiry, athletic forward became the first player in UK’s historic program to win the honor and the second freshman in college basketball history (after Kevin Durant in 2007). Davis beat out fellow forwards Thomas Robinson of Kansas and Draymond Green of Michigan State.

Playing with a spotlight centered on him all season, The Unibrow turned in a dominant season, and absolutely deserved this high recognition. Watch a UK game, and it’s obvious how much he brings to the court, particularly on the defensive side. It’s unfair, really: penetrating guards and forwards look like little kids trying to sneak layups past the athletic Davis, one of the greatest shot-blockers in college basketball history. Add in an incredibly efficient offensive game – he averaged 14 points per game on 64.2% shooting, thanks to a sound post game and surprising range on his jump shot – and it’s hard to imagine a more worthy candidate.

Get used to seeing Davis a lot. It’s all but assured that he’ll go number one next year (should he declare), and given everything that he brings to the table, a young Kevin Garnett is probably a good place to start drawing comparisons. Without all of the woofing and hollering, but still. AD looks to be the kind of player that a team could build a franchise around.
