Carlos Tevez, the former face of the City franchise and thorn in the side of manager Roberto Mancini returned from exile, providing the assist to secure the win against surging Chelsea. Ballsy by Mancini to take the risk of bringing Tevez back but with the three points, they only trail rival Manchester United by one point in the race for English Premier League title. As Man City were down 1-0 after a deflected goal by Chelsea’s Gary Cahill (“60), a handball call on Michael Essien tied the game after Sergio Aguero’s penalty kick goal (“78). The momentum shift resulted in an 86th minute goal by City midfielder Samir Nasri after Tevez held the ball to slide a pass to his teammate for the win.
Chelsea suffers their first defeat with interim manager Roberto Di Matteo at the helm but after their Champions League comeback last week, chances to get into the top four are still possible. Chelsea is five points behind the slumping Tottenham Hotspur, who fell to fourth place after 1-1 draw to Stoke City and Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Everton. The Premier League is still up for grabs for all of the top spots. Now at the tail end of the season, the injection of Carlos Tevez back into the fold may be the key cog to deciding the fate of this year’s champion.
