Usher – “Scream”

By 04.26.12

Usher Raymond may be one of the most versatile pop singers of the past fifteen years or so, even if he doesn’t always show it. After dropping the extremely unique bedroom-burner “Climax” for the first single from his upcoming album Looking For Myself, you’d hope the follow-up would be just as atypical. Yet, “Scream” is far from that. Coasting on an uptempo, 120-plus BPM drum structure and all the fluttering arpeggiated synth build-ups you’ve come to expect from any successful club killer these days, L.A. Reid’s former protege takes the easy route here and you can’t really blame him. “OMG” was by far the most successful record off Raymond vs. Raymond, selling almost seven million copies worldwide. Plus, his joint venture with David Guetta “Without You,” came close to five million in sales.

So, even though we wish Ush could drop more dedicated, creative records every go round, we also understand there’s no harm in shooting for another cool couple milli either. Maybe the next joint will be that addictive, futuristic sound we all know he can help music move on to. Then again, we’re not holding our breath.
