(C)Rank It! – 10 Years Later, Where Does “The Eminem Show” Stand?

By 05.28.12

Eminem Show

When The Eminem Show dropped in May of 2002, Barack Obama was an unknown senator from Chicago, LeBron James had graced the cover of Sports Illustrated for the first time and Murder Inc. was a profitable brand name. Things look a bit different 10 years later.

Eminem himself has seen his career wax and wane since his last truly classic album. His three latest projects and Infinite are solid at best but the “Best Eminem Album” debate is a three-horse race between Show, The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP and my vote will always go to his fourth studio album.

I’ll admit to some bias – on a personal level, it was the definitive album that really got me into music, and the first album that I ever bought (had to sneak behind my dad’s back to do it). Objectively speaking it’s Marshall’s most mature project to date. For the most part, his shock-rock Slim Shady alter ego gave way to a more passionate and politically-driven voice as Em managed to put out a 20-track album with no filler. From classic cuts like “Business” to heavier highlights “Say What You Say” and “‘Till I Collapse,” it’s hard to find a weak link here.

What do you think? Is The Eminem Show Slim’s best work? In (C)Rank It! fashion, where does it stand against the rest of his discography?

Sound off and bring it up at your barbecue. I guarantee the conversation will get heated.
