Wallpaper. Feat. Action Bronson – “Breakfast All Day”

Ever since posting Wallpaper’s party-rocking “I Got Soul, I’m So Wasted,” I’ve been keeping a keen eye on this artist/producer-extraordinaire. However, the results have been spotty. Aside from the soul-warming song he wrote and produced for Cee-Lo, there haven’t been many joints that grabbed me like those two did. Depending who you ask, the couple joints that stood-out amidst his supposedly breakout #STUPiDFACEDD EP were few and far between (“1234″ and “Broke Again”), while the majority of the project seemed a bit cliche for having such talent. It seems his problem might be that he’s naturally-gifted producer, but forces himself to be the vocalist to boot, which occasionally leads to lazy output and gimmicky vocals that make good beats hard to listen to.

Sticking with that same unfortunate formula, the latest in line from the Bay Area do-it-all comes in the form of “Breakfast All Day,” co-starring Bam Bam Bronsolino. Backed by ear-pleasing production that falls somewhere in between early-80s disco and a current club-rocker, this song again suffers from near-hideous vocals from Wallpaper to start the song, only to be saved by Bronson’s appetite for eating up any beat he’s served. But, that should surprise no one. However, a dope beat and quality verse two minutes in don’t necessarily guarantee repeated spins, which is the problem.

As a fan, when I’m turning off more than half Wallpaper’s songs before they peak, that’s not good. In my humble opinion, he’d be way more successful simply as a producer/songwriter and by cutting out the gimmicky vocals that hold back tracks like this and half his catalogue. But, hey, what do I know?
