Summer Movie Spotlight: “Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap”

By 05.10.12

We at TSS can sit back and tell you about how great rap is until we wear out our keyboards, but what better place to hear about the genre’s merits than from the rappers themselves? Thanks to Ice-T the Hip-Hop community can get educated by the genre’s biggest names in the form of upcoming documentary, Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap. The film’s premise seems simple, featuring Ice-T talking shop with an incredible list of names including Nas, Eminem, Bun B, Dr. Dre. He even tracked down Kanye, against all odds.

An intellectual take on rap on the big screen with some Sundance awards credits is exactly the genre needs. Now more than ever, Hip-Hop is the dominant culture shaping America’s youth, from inter-city to suburban. And considering so many young fans think that rap begins and ends with whatever YMCMB project is dominating the radio, a history lesson is in order. A project like this will be just as beneficial to the up-and-coming generation who probably aren’t hip to Q-Tip as to the Hip-Hop veterans who grew up on him.

As a Hip-Hop nerd, I can’t wait to compare the different rappers’ opinions on the genre. Nas and Bun B obviously have vastly different styles of rap, but it’ll be cool to hear them talk about their respect for each other and the soundscape they’ve built. I’d also like to hear Eminem discuss his own legendary flow; he has to have some pretty spectacular insight that you just won’t hear anywhere else.

Make sure to catch Art of Rap when it hits theaters June 15th. Extra credit for those who bring less devout Hip-Hop heads; mainstream America needs to see this movie.
