Most indie hits remixed by Hip-Hoppers begin with the best intentions but end up crashing and burning like a Kid Cudi rock ‘n’ roll project. But this doesn’t faze The Natives. The Cincinnati five-piece take on Toro Y Moi’s “Freak Love,” reconstructing Chazwick Bundick’s hazy funk with slow-motion bars and brags. The Natives don’t reinvent the wheel with their rhymes, but they uniquely integrate their product with Toro Y Moi’s original. Much like Pharcyde remixing Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” there’s symbiosis. That’s all acts with indie-rock tastes need to keep from sounding like, well, WZRD.
