We showcased First Street Heat last year, and would like to be the first to formally introduce you to the band’s newest incarnation, Sassafraz. Like a group of mad scientists throwing any and every sound into a cauldron, Sassafraz is never afraid to push the limits of what “rap,” “rock” or “funk” can truly mean. Case-in-point: “Sound In The Distance,” a six-minute joyride through soulful valleys and peaks, with two laid-back rap verses tossed in to round it out. Really, there’s a little something here for everybody. If you don’t have an appetite for horns and guitar, the rapping and harmonic vocals will do their part to rope you in. Use any adjective you’d like to describe Sassafraz’s unique style, as long as it follows “fresh.”
Be on the lookout for the sextet’s self-titled debut album, due in the fall.
