R. Kelly’s Debut Closed With An Undeniable Classic

By / 06.15.12

Despite Robert Kelly’s black eyes throughout his career – and they are black – with the most recent being allegedly owing damn near $5M in back taxes, it’s hard to argue he hasn’t been one of the most important artists of the past 20 years. As versatile as they come with the ability to craft introspective and inspirational cuts, we all know his bread and butter. The number of bedroom anthems he’s cultivated over the past three decades are as important as the two people using “Bump & Grind,” “Your Body’s Callin’,” “Ignition” or whatever as their musical aphrodisiac.

“12 Play,” the actual song, though? Man, listen. You listening? No, seriously, listen up. You’re not listening. I know you aren’t because if you were, you’d know this song is damn near six minutes for a reason. I’ve said it before and have no problem saying it again. If you’ve got a little cousin born sometime around 1994 or ’95, they’re a “12 Play” baby. So just imagine how much “practice” people have gotten over the years? This final song on Kelly’s debut needs to be in the “Sex Hall of Fame” alongside Gianna Michaels, Rihanna, Carmen Hayes, Hugh Hefner (the man inspired generations of horny young adults) and the creators of the Trojan condoms. It’s just that important.
