23 years after the fact, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing reigns as one of the famous director’s most complete movies. Lee looks to revisit that world in Red Hook Summer, a film about a boy from Atlanta spending the summer with his God-fearing grandfather in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. No lie, the synopsis alone makes Red Hook sound like a Tyler Perry offshoot, but we’ll give Lee the benefit of the doubt. He has enough classics under his belt to earn the right, and the thought of Lee out-doing Perry at his own game is an idea worth hoping for.
And the movie nerds in the audience will definitely go home happy: Mookie from Do The Right Thing will make a cameo appearance. That alone should stir some intrigue.
Look for Summer… to hit theaters in early August.
