No Church In The Wild: Meek Mill & Pastor Jomo Johnson Debate “Amen”

By / 07.12.12

The moment I heard Meek Mill’s “Amen” I knew there was some religious figurehead in America ready to pounce at the opportunity to market himself. Enter Pastor Jomo K. Johnson. The “Man of God” and MMG’s Philly star-in-the-making had a discussion (if that’s what you want to call it) on their city’s Hot 107.9. To avoid typing a thesis, Jomo believes Meek is pimping the Christian faith in the song and regardless of what he does for his community, it does not negate the fact he promotes violence and promiscuity in his lyrics. Meek simply adopts the “only God can judge me” approach.

Frankly, Jomo’s entire basis would have had a better leg to stand on if he wasn’t promoting his new book, No Amen: Why Boycotting Meek Mill Will Help Save Hip-Hop. No resolution or middle ground was truly established; not that either party gave even the slightest consideration of budging from their original stance. The argument does establish two things however. One, I’m still going to knock “Amen” in the whip. The Big Man up above knows my heart. And two, Cam’ron should just be commissioned to debate anyone who attempts to paint Hip-Hop in a negative light. Jomo wouldn’t have stood a chance again the debating prowess of The Crowned Orator of Harlem.
