Skratch Bastid & The Gaff – Soul Sisters, Stand Up! Mixtape

By / 07.28.12

It’s been a good week for mixtapes. First our man Jaycee came through with Eargasms 10, and now Skratch Bastid and The Gaff bring you Soul Sisters, Stand Up!, a 53-track journey through soul jams from the ’60s and ’70s that features only female vocalists. Packed with rap samples amongst joints you will and won’t recognize, this mix (like Jaycee’s) features a very healthy dose of actual mixing and scratching, something that seems like a lost art in the current mixtape generation*.

The selections are funky, sequenced and blended flawlessly, showcasing the voices of Marlena Shaw, Lyn Collins, Merry Clayton, Etta James, Aretha and many more. Some of the O.G. samples are looped live, recreating the classics on the fly in the context of the mix without losing momentum. Stream the tape to preview if you must, but smart money says a download might be in order as this is likely to get repeat listens from any avid fan of quality music.

* — Last week, I witnessed a 16-year-old find out the homie Applejac–who was on the turntables at that very moment–had a mixtape for sale, then immediately approach him and say, “oh, you rap too?” As far as he was aware, mixtapes are the sole dominion of the MC.
