Young producer crafts huge hits for some of the biggest names in music (including, possibly THE biggest name). Said producer forms mentor-mentee relationship with the aforementioned huge name. Producer becomes one of the most sought after beatsmiths in the game. Producer suddenly wants to begin his rap career. Sound familiar?
It’s pretty easy to draw the comparison between Hit-Boy and Kanye West. Their paths, while not altogether the same, have some glaring similarities. Still, I find the differences far more interesting. When Kanye West made the illogical step of beginning his career as a rapper just as he was becoming one of the most sought-after producers in music, he powered through the resistance of his detractors with unflinching confidence, and searing arrogance. He knew how great he was going to be, even if you were too stupid to see it.
Hit-Boy’s approach is a bit different. Even after being behind the boards for massive hits by The Throne, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber, his demeanor remains unfailingly humble. So if not hyper-confidence, what drives the 25-year-old? Can he prove his naysayers wrong while wearing a smile, or is a “fuck you” sneer the only way to the next level? His free album, HITstory should give us the first clue as to what’s been going through the G.O.O.D. music youngin’s mind as he watches all of his dreams come true. HITstory includes features from Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Bun B, Chip Tha Ripper, John Legend and Surf Club songstress, Stacy Barthe, and is available for free download.
