While I can’t quite shake the feeling that Jeremih – an artist with a recent track record and a voice that translates naturally onto rap records – would have been a more logical R&B signing for MMG than Omarion, it would seem that Jeremih himself is too busy getting on with his own business to pay any mind to “what if.” Following a quietly solid debut album (which, contrary to popular belief, did indeed run deeper than hit single “Birthday Sex”) and a sophomore release that failed to make much of a mark on the charts, Jeremih is back to putting in the legwork needed to build up his buzz.
Having recently jumped on a bunch of tracks for other artists (Meek Mill’s “Amen,” Wale’s “That Way”), Jeremih’s latest move in his effort to get fans to reinvest in his music is Late Nights with Jeremih, a sprawling 18-track mixtape that plays more like an album in its sweet spots. Hosted by DJ Drama and DJ Pharris, the tape boasts production from the likes of Tricky Stewart and Mike Will (who handles the project’s centerpiece, the synth-washed “773 Love”). Big name guests like 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, and Fabolous pop up on feature duty, but none match the fun of Twista and Do or Die’s AK fast-rapping all over “Ladies.”
