In the wake of the Chief Keef shitstorm, the climate feels like any music with questionable morals needs a disclaimer warning viewers – especially younger ones – of what they’re about to behold. Or at least Gunplay’s “Take This” song and video do.
In fact, any time someone asks “Is that new Gunplay worth listening to?” I immediately direct them to “Take This.” As the opening track to the 601 & Snort mixtape, the record sums up what Gunplay provides in terms of entertainment: pure drug-addled rants whittled down to prose form that may or may not amuse depending on your station in life. He’s definitely a rap miscreant, as displayed in the self-directed video for the track and heard when he spews out lines like “What up bitch, let me cock yo’ spaniel, Wash a n*gga dreads, clean out a n*gga dandruff.” After checking “Take This,” going further with 601 is a personal choice but at least you can form an early opinion before taking the leap.
Since we’re here, take the additional track from Alley Boy featuring Gunplay on “I’ma Shooter,” a joint set to be included on the former’s The Gift Of Discernment mixtape, which drops on September 18th. Not for nothing but Alley’s Discernment cover is quite the work of art, too, and I like the fact that he took the time to define the big word for his fans.
601 & Snort can be downloaded here. The warning is already out there.
