While we involuntarily witness Bountygate and the replacement refs fiasco blow up in our faces, a black cloud surrounds the NFL today with the passing of a true legend Steve Sabol. The NFL Films President suffered from an 18-month battle with brain cancer which has ultimately ended his life just weeks before what would have been his 70th birthday.

In 1985, after taking over the reigns from his father, Ed, the heights Steve took the company were nothing short of legendary and a large reason why the league itself remains such an indelible part of American culture. In total, Double S helped bring home over 107 Emmys for NFL Films while capturing 40 himself and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

It’s not a stretch to say we all grew up on him in some shape, form or fashion. How I’ll always remember buddy? Watching random NFL programs narrated by him with my uncle (who also passed from cancer) learning the history, the ins and outs of the game. Rest In Power to a true football legend and icon.
